Heirloom Seeds / Organic Seeds
Heirloom seeds are not defined consistently throughout the gardening community, but generally speaking, these are seeds that have come from plants that have been developed before 1940 and are openly pollinated.
Organic seeds are those that have been produced without such chemicals as pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers.
Both kinds of seeds are worth their weight in gold.
Supermarket Produce
When you visit your local supermarket to buy produce, check out where it has been grown. You will find that most produce has been primarily grown far away from you. Much of this produce has even been raised in near laboratory conditions. These days, most vegetable varieties are selected for their shipping ability, uniform ripeness, and ability to perform well in a chemical environment such as is present in places where the farmers use pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. In fact, most seeds used are hybrid; the result of Genetically Modified Organisms.
Potential Effects of GMO's, (Genetically Modified Organisms)
In mid-1998, at the University of Chicago, several technicians experimented with a mustard variety by genetically modifying it so that it would be herbicide resistant. Later, Joy Bergelson, of the University of Illinois, published a paper stating that the genetically-engineered mustard is over 20 times more likely to successfully reproduce than its natural counterpart which could be growing right next to it. This is indeed tragic, if you look at it closely.
This is definitely a threat to all of us! It may be possible to lose a rare variety of a plant maintained for generations to a far-off planting of a genetically-engineered crop that may seem to be safely isolated at the time.
Organic Living offers specialized seeds including:
• Heirloom varieties to conserve and distribute rare and endangered varieties;
• Open-pollinated varieties to encourage seed saving and exchange among gardeners;
• Varieties for local and small-scale growers to encourage regional food production.
Our Seeds
We specialize in heirloom seeds along with our organic seeds because we believe that if we were just to get back to the way gardens used to be grown, our communities, including the people and garden crops, will all be healthier. In today's world, there is a huge need to return to this healthy way of living. People, as a whole, will be happier and healthier when they grow and consume their own produce, or even purchase organic produce from the small local growers.
None of our seeds have been treated by fungicides or insecticides; they are all organic and are specific for the southern climate and do well in the Florida's heat and humidity. If you have experienced failure with growing seeds in the past, and they did not perform well, try our seeds. You may notice quite a difference. You deserve selected varieties that have been adapted for this area specifically for its production as well as for its delicious taste.
